Early into the 2024 Draft Cycle, we’ve seen some interesting performances. A player who’s taken some major steps this season, is Tyrese Proctor. Through 8 regular season games, He’s currently putting up 12 points and 7 assists. His current splits of 44/34/86 shows an improvement in efficiency from last season. His 2pt% is +13% better than last year, while increasing his volume. His cohesion as a pick and roll player has especially been standout, ranking in the 89th percentile for P&R possessions including passes(Via Synergy). I aim to take a deeper look, determine what’s real, and how much more growth is needed to be a top tier prospect.
When looking at his ball handling, its taken a major leap. His ball speed has improved a ton, his ability to use non telegraphed transitions has allowed him to slip into really tight spaces . On this play, he uses a between the leg shoot fake(lifting his hand as if to pull up), then crossover. After getting the defender out of position, he drops his shoulder and takes a wide angle. This allows him to get an easy finish.
in general he drops his shoulder and establishes space early. This allows him to elevate early and extend around defenders.
In situations where he can’t extend, he uses his touch to release over frontcourt players. On this play, he uses a push cross to get by, reads the big mans positioning, and then elevates early with a quick floater.
He’s shown consistency in beating gap defenders as well, using a overhand gather to use an extend finish.
He plays to his own tempo, always looking to adjust his timing to throw off the defense. he pauses twice here to throw off the help, then abruptly elevates into a contact lay. Even if its a miss, the pace and balance is promising overall.
He’s an aggressive pull up threat in the PNR, constantly looking for pockets if there’s no passing opening. He loves slipping into the mid lane for jumpers.
This comfort with pressure extends to his pick and roll game. He comfortably throws this over the top pass to Kyle.
He drives on an angle to force the help to commit, creating a wing 3.
He has great timing in the pick and roll. he throws the lob just as Reeves passes his man’s hip.
His understanding on beating doubles is already ahead of his age. he faces his back to the double, allowing him to spin past the big man’s hip. He then extends his arm to makes an elite pass to the cutting forward.
When functioning outside of the pick and roll, he’s able to quickly shake defenders off the catch and consistently get separation.
He’s even shown activity off the ball, executing this over the top cut.
Whether its his composure as an on ball initiator, or his versatility in off ball situations, Tyrese Proctor has shown some major improvements. I can’t wait to see what will come next.
